Gull Lake Essay Contest Guide
“How can my family and I help to combat climate change as cottagers”
Eligible: essayists/contestants must be cottagers on Gull Lake and aged 16 or younger on July 1st, 2022.
Judging will be in 2 age groups, Senior: 16 & under, Junior: 12 & under.
Prizes in each age category: 1st $175, 2nd $150, 3rd $100
Essay length: Seniors: 500-2000 words, Juniors 300-2000 words.
Ensure your essay includes a title which can be the assigned starter or your own, an introduction, the suggestion(s) for combating climate change and a conclusion. The body of the essay can be organized as you desire. Figures, tables, pictures and figures can be used without adding to word count. Before submission, proof read your essay and have others do the same if possible.
Final score will be the total marks out of a possible 50
Marking will be as follows:
Up to 4 marks each for the introduction and conclusion (total 8 marks).
Up to 36 marks for the originality and presentation of your suggestions.
Up to 6 marks for appropriately formatted in-text citations for all information from research and full details of all references at the end of the paper (references do not count in the word count)
Be sure to submit by midnight on August 15th, 2022 by emailing it as an attachment to glcaclimatechange@yahoo.com. You will receive an acknowledgement within 48 hours. IF you have not received an acknowledgement by the morning of August 18th, please email again with a copy to michael@jewett.ca
Your essay will be anonymized (your name will be removed and a numeric identifier substituted) and submitted to the judges for marking. The results will be announced by September 5, 2022.
